Who do you think are the top players in the league under 25? There have been some major breakthroughs for some guys this year so I'm curious to see what people think about some of these kids. Unlike those all star threads don't factor in draft position or anything.

However, DO factor in long-term value, not just this single year's performance... but still remember the 'unproven' factor for the younger guys. Toss out as many names as you want and we'll discuss and put them on the list if worthy. Since this will probably take a while and people may have birthdays mid-discussion consider the cut off date June 1983.

C- Brian McCann (24)
1B- Prince Fielder (23)
2B- Dustin Pedroia (24)
3B- Ryan Braun (24)
SS- Hanley Ramirez (24)
OF- Nick Markakis (24)
OF- Jacoby Ellsbury (24)
OF- B.J. Upton (23)
DH-

Honorable mentions: Jose Reyes (24), Howie Kendrick (24), Justin Upton (20), Jay Bruce (20), James Loney (23), Matt Kemp (23)

SP- Cole Hamels (24)
SP- Scott Kazmir (23)
SP- Tim Lincecum (24)
SP- Felix Hernandez (21)
SP- Justin Verlander (24)

Honorable mentions: Chad Billingsley (23)

RP- Joakim Soria (23)
RP- Jonathan Broxton (23)

Really interesting idea poon. I started thinking about the catching position and it looks like Martin, Mauer and Soto all just turned 25. So I will go with Brian McCann (24) and with an honorable mention to Dioneer Navarro (24)

I thought about guys like Jeff Clement and a JR Towles .. but they havnt done shit in the Majors.

I'll start with Ryan Braun and Hanley Ramirez. Both are 24 years old and turning 25 later this year. H Ram is already 1 of the better hitters in the game and best power - speed combo in baseball. Ramirez will be a star for at least next 7-8 years in this league barring an injury off course. Fantasy wise he is slightly more valuable than in real life as his defence is questionable to say the least. Braun on the other hand is 1 of the best hitter in the league and will be an annual 35 HR guy with possibly some 40+ HR seasons too.

Jose reyes has to be a honable mention in the SS catergory.

Navarro's an interesting one BP. My biggest issue is that he has Mike Piazza-like defensive prowess, and hasn't come into full form as a hitter yet... although he is greatly improved this year. We don't need to have a 2nd name for each position by the way, just the best of the would-be-2nd-teamers.

Yeah, 1 of the more exciting players in the game today but is unfortunately stuck behind Ramirez. Also Reyes is turning 25 in 12 days so he's just eligible too...

How bout this guy... Felix Hernandez. A seemingly obvious pick BUT his numbers in the majors have been good but not spectacular in any category. He best full year netted a 3.94 ERA but in his 2 full years he pumped out an average of 170 Ks. Kazmir and Hamels are obviously better but King Felix is good enough to make this list isn't he? Mind you he's only 21.

Ian Kinsler just just turned 25... I'm a bit stumped at who's any good at 2B under 25, so ill throw out Dustin Pedroia for the time being.

I don't see how Navarro even gets mentioned to be honest. He does have ok power (15-20 HR guy possibly) but there are number of options that are alot better than him. Brian McCann would be my pick - he did slump last year (18 HRs) after hitting 24 in his first full year. The guy is still 24 years old and couple years away from his prime when he should be able to hit 30 HRs for at least 2-3 seasons. He will also be driving in around 100 runs a year too... Couple other guys who Biz mentioned (Martin and Mauer) are a notch below McCann. Why? Well Martin has played 151 games last year (145 behind the plate), he also stole 21 bases - has played all 53 games so far this year (51 behind the plate) and is running again. I'm really worried about Martin long term. Mauer on the other hand is a very good hitter but just isn't showing power whick knocks him down abit. Soto is still unproven in my opinion - need to see him for a remainder of the year at least before getting a better idea on him. It's hard to make an opinion on 257 career ABs...

Yeah Upton moved to the OF, Cano, Weeks, and Kinsler hit 25... hmm.

I guess that leaves like... Asdrubal Cabrera and Dustin Pedroia. Cabrera has been abysmal at the plate but has a sticky glove. Pedroia been solid on both sides of the ball... so I'll agree with you. There's really no one else...

hey darko ...

I did vote for Mccann .. I chose Navarro as a honorable mention because all the guys you mentioned above are 25 years old. (Soto, Mauer, Martin) that's why I didnt add them. If you take those guys away, who else is there?

Completely agree ... Felix just turned 22 - Cole Hamels made his debut at the age of 22 while Felix is now in his 3rd full year. Kazmir falls in the same category as Felix - made his debut real early and is now in his 4th full year. These guys get downgraded a little bit because they don't improve as rapidly as other guys but age is the factor there... IMO definitely deserves to be on the list...

Howie Kendrick but only because of his upside. He needs to stay healthy which doesnt look like happening any time soon lol.
