Jack Cust went 2-2 today. Another strikeout today would've tied him with Bo Jackson for most strikeouts by an AL hitter before the All Star break (114)...

Pelfrey shut the Rockies out tonight for 8 innings. This guys been almost dominant for the past month. Similar to McGowan last year, this kid took alittle longer then most expected to figure things out ... but he's def. arrived.

Mike Pelfrey and Matt Joyce were named the MLB Players of the Week. Pelfrey went 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts in 15 innings and Joyce hit .409 with 4 doubles, 4 home runs, and 6 RBI.

Carmona made his first rehab appearance yesterday. He should be back with the Indians soon.

I read on rotowire that the Nationals have emerged as a strong candidate in the Holliday trade sweepstakes. Do they even have the players to make such a deal?

They have some decent pitching prospects and a few ok position guys, and I am sure they are desperate for a star, so I could see them being a strong candidate.

Not really. Ross Detwiler has lost a lot of his stock, as have guys like Jack McGreary & Colin Ballestar have been somewhat disappointing, McGreary moreso. Josh Smoker has been poor, albeit in a limited season. Their position players have not fared much better. Chris Marrero has not improved while being in the same league he was for most of last season. Michael Burgess has shown more power, but also a higher propensity to whiff. The only real bright spot, among top prospects has been Jordan Zimmerman.

I could definitely see the Yankees signing Barry Bonds. First off, NY is a media zoo. There isnt much they could do to get more media attention. Also, the Yankees tend to get desperate. If they are unable to acquire a good bat, I think it boils down to Richie Sexson vs Barry Bonds, and the Yanks would take Barry.

Hideo Nomo announced his retirement. He was a great influence on other Japanese players deciding to start playing over here.
