Pirates placed first-round selection Pedro Alvarez on the restricted list. Alvarez refuses to sign his contract at the behest of his agent, the always lovable Scott Boras. Boras is demanding that the Pirates increase Alvarez's $6 million bonus, and says the contract was submitted after the deadline on August 15. MLB has confirmed that the contract was submitted in time, though. "We are not surprised that Mr. Boras would attempt to raise a meritless legal claim in an effort to compel us to renegotiate Pedro's contract to one more to his liking," Pirates president Frank Coonelly said.

Why? The contract was submitted ontime according to the MLB, there is no way that Alvarez isnt a Pirate. True, Alvarez will probably never sign another deal with the Pirates, but I dont see a way that even Scott Boras could get his client out of this one.

It will be fine. The situation will be resolved as if this never happened. Boras won't get his way.

I agree Lkat .... After many bad seasons and many wasted top picks .. the pressure is on the Pirates to start producing in the farm similar to what the Rays have done of late. and this isnt a good sign to see from the start of there first round picks career ....

Pirates didnt waste their pick. Alvarez was 1 of the best players in the draft and will be accelerated to majors so he also gives immediate help. Great pick by Pirates (for a change) but unfortunately he has a clown as his agent.

The key question is if he is under contract or not?

According to the MLB, a contract agreement between Alvarez and the Pirates was to the league in a "timely" fashion, so I think that he is under contract.

MLBTR is speculating that Alvarez took over the negotiations and asked for a small deadline extension, similar to what Eric Hosmer did, and that it was granted, but Boras wasnt aware of this extension, and that is why he is accusing the Pirtates of submitting a contract late.
