Rotoworld.com Brewers signed outfielder Ryan Braun to an eight-year, $45 million contract. The deal includes Braun's $455,000 salary for this season, so it's really a seven-year extension that will keep the reigning NL Rookie of the Year in Milwaukee through 2015. In handing out the largest contract in team history, the Brewers buy out Braun's first two years of free agency and keep him locked up through his age-31 season. Braun is only 152 games into his big league career, so there's plenty of risk involved for the Brewers, but if he stays healthy and productive the team will end up saving a ton of money.

Braun would be arbitration eligible for the 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012 season & a FA for 2013 & 2014. If the deal is a max $45M through 2014 it's intriguing.

Obviously the obvious arbitration comparison is Ryan Howard who got 10 million in his first year of arbitration. Let's say Braun is also a 10 million a year arbitration guy. Obviously that number depends heavily on this season but he's on pace for roughly 36 home runs & more walks. The main big difference here is Braun should be a Super-2 meaning he's eligible for arbitration for his third season, I believe.

Is it me, or are we seeing a trend to sign your young stars through artibration? Either way, It's a good deal as it allows the Brewers to focus on other players while they have braun signed past his eligible FA time.

I can't remember this many young guys being signed but I suppose money is no longer an issue for most major league teams. So, they are able to eat the risk & further inflate free agent salaries :)

Anytime you can lock up a hitter like Braun for $5M/year, you'd be foolish not to. I know that Prince Fielder has been campaigning for a long term extension since the end of last season. I'm sure he's next.

I wholeheartedly agree with you Kobe,,,

Anytime you can gamble with 45mill its obvious there is a ton of money floating around,,,

Besides, in 5 or 6 years, a journeyman outfielder will potentially cost 10 mill a season, so even if Braun flops in the end, its a relatively safe gamble all the way around for the Brew Crew brass.

it can go up to 51 mill through incentives... also it runs thru to 2015.

He also has a full no trade clause in 1st 4 years, then partial no trade clause in following 4 years. In 2012 and 2013 he can block trades to 12 teams and in 2014 and 2015 he can block trades to 6 teams.

As long as it keeps him out of Pinstripes or Red Sox I'm happy.

I hope Braun is a high character player who will play out the contracts he signs. With the numbers he is putting up he will be really unhappy with this contract a few years down the road.

i think it is a smart move by these young kids.....they are actually thinking smart instead of thinking greedy. they are going for the stability rather than hope by 2010 that they get a big payoff.

now even if he sucks, he knows he is guaranteed all that money until 2015. no brainer. PLUS, if he is a megastar, i am SURE his agent will find a way to renegotiate lol

it is a win-win for these young guys

Who would have guesed that Braun is now the highest paid Brewer player of all time. They gave Jeff Suppan a 4 year $42 million contract before the 2007 season.

Prince Fielder barked for a lucrative extension this spring while Ryan Braun got one. Does anyone know why they did not offer Prince a contract extension?
