| The Red Sox are in talks with a few teams in an attempt to bolster their bullpen. Brian Fuentes is the main guy they are targeting. he has taken over the closer role in Colorado and has put up decent numbers. |
Desamo Marte is another guy they are looking at. I am guessing that the Red Sox are unhappy with Buchholz as an SP right now, and want to put Masterson back in at SP, so they are looking for another guy that could be a good bridge to Papelbon. The problem is I dont see them giving up much for a bullpen guy becasue of the Eric Gagne thing last year. |
Marte's an absolute stud lefty specialist (.198 career BAA against LHB, 10 HRA in 681 ABs against LHB), but he's also a very good setup man. His splits against righties obviously aren't as good as lefties but they're still very good. Also, he's always been a 7th or 8th inning guy, and has never been a closer for more than a stop-gap period because of injuries in front of him.
I hate seeing him wasting away in Pittsburgh... he would be a great pickup for any contender and they shouldn't hesitate if they can get him for a somewhat reasonable price. _________________

And the Astros continue to make stupid moves in their mistaken belief that they are in the hunt. _________________

Who closes for WAS now? Chad Cordero is done for the year, and I dont know anyone besides Ayala in their pen. Also, is Rauch being brought in as a set-up man for Lyon, or will Lyon go back to set-up and will Rauch close? _________________

ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports that the Yankees are taking a "serious look" at Jarrod Washburn.
Washburn's ERA sits at 4.75 on the season, but that's down over two full runs from his 6.99 high on May 23. He has also pitched well at Yankee Stadium, sporting a 2.82 ERA in six starts there over his career. He's under contract for $9.85 million in 2009, and the new Yankee Stadium is thought to benefit lefties just like the current one. With Andy Pettitte and Mike Mussina both facing free agency this winter, he could provide depth for the next year and a half.
Time to pick up Washburn in your leagues and store him away |
Time to burn my Yankee hat.

Pretty close to it, Bowden is an idiot.
This is from last year:
| Quote: |
MIAMI -- Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly running a stop sign while in Florida during his team's series against the Marlins last weekend.
A few minutes before he was stopped, Bowden and his girlfriend were apparently involved in an altercation that left him with scratches and resulted in battery and resisting arrest charges against her.
A Miami Beach police report said the 44-year-old Bowden refused to take a breath-alcohol test after he was stopped at 2:22 a.m. Monday. An officer said he saw Bowden run the stop sign on Collins Avenue, a main thoroughfare in the South Beach neighborhood. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested, the report said.
The report said that "a strong smell of an alcoholic beverage" emanated from the gray 2006 Cadillac STS that Bowden was driving and that he had "bloodshot eyes, glassy eyes, flush red face and slurred speech." The arresting officers concluded that Bowden "was unable to operate a motor vehicle safely."
A second police report said that about 10 minutes before Bowden was pulled over, two officers saw him and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Joy Browning, arguing along nearby Ocean Drive. After assuring police that everything was fine, they drove off and allegedly ran through the stop sign.
Police then noticed that Bowden had scratches on his right ear and left cheek and told Browning she would be arrested for a domestic violence charge. She refused to get out of the car and struck one of the officers twice after he took her cell phone, police said. |
... and then just a few days ago
| Quote: |
Federal authorities and Major League Baseball are investigating Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden and special assistant Jose Rijo for their possible roles in a growing financial scandal involving the signing of players from the Dominican Republic, several sources familiar with the probe told ESPN.
GM Jim Bowden says he and other Nationals officials have spoken to MLB's investigators and the FBI.
Anyone implicated could face felony fraud charges, sources familiar with the investigation said.
Numerous MLB employees in the United States and the Dominican Republic are under suspicion in the probe, which allegedly involves the skimming of signing money allocated for Dominican prospects. Bowden, a 23-year veteran of MLB front offices and a general manager on and off since 1992, is the highest-ranking official known to be under investigation. |
But hey, all of this is better than the Cristian Guzman contract... _________________

| Ohh and lets not forget about mid 2006 season when he failed to trade Alfonso Soriano. What a great move that was. Did he really think Sori was going to come back? LOL

| Thank you Arizona! You have successfully kept the price of relievers down & thwarted the efforts of the Rockies to extort teams for Fuentes.

I bet that if Wagner is going to be out for a long amount of time, that they could get Neise from the Mets. The new report from MLBTR says that the Rockies are looking at Humberto Sanchez, so that is another decent deal. Either way, I am sure they get more for Fuentes then the Nats got for Rauch. _________________
